Mario Kart World Becomes First Switch 2 Title to Cross One Million Physical Sales in Japan

by Ali Haider

Mario Kart World is the first Nintendo-published title to sell over 1 million physical copies in Japan, marking a notable achievement as this figure does not include digital sales. It is also the first Nintendo Switch 2 game to reach this milestone. According to the latest retail data, the game has sold 1,040,044 physical units, with 122,578 copies sold in the most recent tracking period.

Launched on June 5, 2025, alongside the Switch 2 console, Mario Kart World has rapidly become the flagship racing game for the platform. The Nintendo Switch 2 itself achieved remarkable success at launch, selling over 3.5 million units globally within its first four days, making it the fastest-selling Nintendo hardware to date. This strong adoption of the console has likely contributed to Mario Kart World’s performance, solidifying its status as a key title in the Switch 2’s lineup.

Nintendo has recently released version 1.1.2 of Mario Kart World, sparking discussion among players about changes to the “Random” course selection in wireless VS Races and online matchmaking. Previously, the Random option favored traditional three-lap courses, avoiding shorter “intermission” tracks. The update now limits Random to a smaller pool of three pre-selected courses, many of which include single-lap routes. This change has frustrated some fans who preferred the variety and challenge of classic multi-lap races.

The patch also addressed several technical issues, including a rate fluctuation display bug in Online Play and Knockout Tour, a recovery delay in “Dino Dino Jungle,” and a collision problem near the finish line in “Boo Cinema” during Bullet Bill transformations. While these fixes improved stability, the altered course selection remains the main focus of player discussions.

Mario Kart World is exclusively available for the Nintendo Switch 2. It can be purchased individually for $79.99 or as part of a bundle with the Nintendo Switch 2.
