Matt Booty on Halo’s PlayStation Expansion: “Our Biggest Competition Isn’t Another Console”

by Ali Haider

In a defining moment for Xbox’s evolving strategy, Halo—long considered the cornerstone of Microsoft’s gaming identity—is officially expanding to PlayStation platforms. With Halo: Campaign Evolved set to launch on PlayStation 5 in 2026, the move signals a historic shift toward full multiplatform publishing for the Xbox brand, following the earlier release of Gears of War and Forza on Sony’s console.

Speaking about this new direction, Matt Booty, President of Xbox Game Content and Studios, emphasized that Microsoft’s broader vision transcends traditional platform competition. “We are all seeking to meet people where they are,” Booty stated, highlighting the company’s intent to prioritize accessibility and audience reach. “Our biggest competition isn’t another console,” he added, noting, “We are competing more and more with everything from TikTok to movies.”

The upcoming release of Halo: Campaign Evolved marks the first time the legendary franchise will appear outside the Xbox ecosystem in its nearly 25-year history. Developed by 343 Industries, the title is a rebuilt and modernized version of the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign, designed to take advantage of next-generation hardware capabilities. Players can expect enhanced visuals, updated gameplay mechanics, and both two-player couch co-op and four-player online crossplay features, reinforcing the franchise’s emphasis on shared, cooperative experiences.

Brian “ske7ch” Jarrard, Community Director at Halo Studios, confirmed the studio’s long-term commitment to PlayStation as part of this new strategy. “Halo is on PlayStation going forward,” Jarrard stated, confirming that future installments in the series will continue to appear on Sony platforms. He further elaborated on the significance of this expansion, explaining that the decision reflects Halo’s enduring mission of bringing people together. “The series has always been about shared experiences and friendships forged through cooperative play,” Jarrard said. “Bringing Halo to PS5 represents a new chapter in that legacy.”

Microsoft’s growing embrace of multiplatform releases represents one of the most notable strategic transformations in its history. What began as cautious experimentation with select titles has evolved into a comprehensive cross-platform philosophy. In recent years, the company has increasingly positioned itself as a content-first publisher, aligning with its broader ecosystem that includes Game Pass, PC integration, and cloud streaming initiatives.

With Halo: Campaign Evolved arriving on PS5 in 2026, the franchise’s expansion marks not only a symbolic moment for Xbox but also a redefinition of what platform identity means in the modern gaming landscape. As competition now stretches beyond consoles to encompass streaming platforms, entertainment apps, and digital engagement at large, Microsoft appears poised to adapt—prioritizing reach and relevance over exclusivity.
