Sega and Atlus’ new role-playing game IP, Metaphor: ReFantazio, may become a series one day, according to director Katsura Hashino.
During an interview in the latest weekly issue of Famitsu magazine (via), Studio Zero director Katsura Hashino was asked about the studio’s plans for future titles. Hashino responded by saying that, when he creates a new game in the future, he believes the best setting would be the Sengoku period, so it might materialize into a JRPG set in a world similar to the Basara series.
As for Metaphor: ReFantazio, Hashino said that he doesn’t have any concrete plans in place to turn it into a series. However, he did express his interest in wanting to turn it into a series. He mentioned that the project began as an attempt to create a third JRPG series after Shin Megami Tensei and Persona. As such, he wants to develop it into a flagship title that represents his company.
During an earlier interview with Famitsu, Hashino had confirmed that him and his team have already started working on their next project. It is unlikely to be Metaphor: ReFantazio 2, as the director has confirmed there are no concrete plans for a sequel. As such, we’re unlikely to be hearing about another entry for quite some time. That said, an anime adaptation is currently in talks.
Previously, it was reported that Metaphor: ReFantazio is now the most successful launch for an Atlus game on the platform. The role-playing game has reached an all-time peak of 85,961 players since its release on October 11, 2024. In comparison to Metaphor: ReFantazio’s all-time peak of 61,969 players, Persona 3 Reload has a concurrent player count of 45,002 players and Persona 5 Royal has a concurrent player count of 35,474 players.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC.
