Mewgenics Expanding Beyond PC With Console Versions in Development

by Ali Haider

Mewgenics is officially in development for consoles, according to creator Edmund McMillen. The confirmation came through a series of social media exchanges shortly after the game’s successful launch on Steam. While no release window has been announced, McMillen indicated that work on console versions is already underway.

The discussion began when a user speculated about the potential scale of a console launch. In response, McMillen stated, “Honestly not a ton bigger but it will happen, don’t worry.” He followed up in a separate post, adding, “Working on it now not sure when it will be done though but at this point it might be in Dev for all systems.” The comments suggest that the team is exploring development across multiple platforms, though specific consoles have not been named.

Mewgenics is a tactical role-playing game that blends roguelike mechanics with life simulation systems. Developed and published by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, the project has had a lengthy and complicated history. Originally announced in 2012, the game underwent a multi-year cancellation before being revived in 2018. Its eventual release earlier this month marked the culmination of more than a decade of intermittent development.

At its core, Mewgenics centers on an intricate cat breeding and genetics system. Players manage a household of cats, carefully pairing them to pass down specific traits and mutations in order to strengthen future generations. These feline lineages are then deployed in teams of four into grid-based, turn-based tactical battles that unfold across a large-scale campaign. The combination of strategic combat and long-term genetic planning gives the game a distinct identity within the genre.
