The resolution and frame rate for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S versions of Asobo Studio’s Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 have been revealed.
During the September, 2024, developer stream for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, developer Asobo Studio responded to a question from the community regarding the game’s resolution and frame rate targets on both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. In response, Asobo Studio CEO and co-founder Sebastian Wiloch revealed that the Xbox Series X runs the game at a native resolution of 4K (2160p) and a frame rate that targets 30 fps. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series S runs Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 at a native resolution of 1080p, while also targeting 30 fps.
The development team was also asked whether Xbox players can expect performance and memory related stability issues in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 much like in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, and whether any optimizations have been made to make the new level of fidelity possible on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. In response, Wiloch mentioned that the optimizations are across the board. Specifically with regards to Xbox consoles, he said that the new GDK gives the development team an additional 500 MB of memory to work with.
Furthermore, Wiloch stated that optimizations are in place to take advantage of virtual memory on Xbox Series X|S, which yields 2 GB of additional available memory. He said that this really helps in terms of stability and and also performance. Having more memory helps a lot on Xbox, as the development team now only loads visible LODs on the mesh into memory. In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, if a plane has five LODs, all five are loaded into memory. On the other hand, in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, only the one which is actually visible on-screen is present in memory, and it doesn’t load the ones which are not needed in any given instance, which helps a lot with memory optimization.
