Microsoft Is helping Bethesda Game Studios in improving Creation Engine using Unreal Engine inspired components, as per a new rumor.
During the latest episode of The Xbox Two podcast, co-host Jez Corden outlined rumors suggesting that Microsoft is actively helping Bethesda Game Studios in modernizing Creation Engine by integrating technology inspired by Unreal Engine. According to him, the rumored “Starfield 2.0” update is not a sequel or a miracle fix that will suddenly convert detractors. Instead, it appears to be a substantial technical overhaul serving a much more strategic purpose. Starfield is reportedly being used as a testbed for deeper engine improvements, allowing the studio to experiment with new systems before rolling them out to future titles.
The most intriguing claim is that Microsoft’s Advanced Technology Group is directly involved in this effort. Corden specifically referenced leadership tied to The Coalition, the studio behind Gears of War and one of Microsoft’s most experienced Unreal Engine teams. Kate Rayner, who has worked closely with Unreal-based pipelines, is said to be part of this push to modernize Creation Engine.
Rather than switching Bethesda completely to Unreal Engine, Corden suggested that certain Unreal Engine features and workflows are being studied, adapted, and integrated directly into Creation Engine. In other words, Bethesda retains its proprietary tech, while gaining some of the efficiencies, rendering techniques, or tooling philosophies that have made Unreal Engine appealing across the industry.
Corden suggested that these upgrades are meant to lay the groundwork for Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls VI, both of which would presumably be built on this newly enhanced version of Creation Engine. That said, he stressed that this information comes from ongoing investigation and industry chatter, not an official report.
Recently, multiple sources claimed that Bethesda Game Studios invited members of the press and content creators to attend a presentation on upcoming content for Starfield, including a 2.0 update. Read about it here.
