On the occasion of N7 Day 2025, EA and BioWare released a new piece of artwork that hints at story details for Mass Effect 5.

The image in question is a piece of concept artwork seemingly for Mass Effect 5, titled “Civil War.” It shows a Krogan warrior in full battle armor leading a fierce assault, surrounded by chaos, explosions, and other soldiers locked in combat. The artwork immediately captured the attention of fans, hinting that the next chapter in the Mass Effect saga may revolve around a new and dangerous conflict i.e. a Krogan Civil War.

The concept art depicts the Krogan, known for their immense strength and battle-hardened culture, fighting one another on a massive scale. The ferocity of the imagery hints at more than a small uprising, suggesting deep fractures within Krogan society. This could point to a power struggle between rival clans, ideological divisions about the Krogan’s future, or perhaps renewed tensions over the scars left by the genophage and its aftermath.

The Krogan have always been defined by their turbulent history: once a species that nearly destroyed its own world through nuclear war, then uplifted by the Salarians and Turians to serve as soldiers, only to be later subdued by the genophage that crippled their ability to reproduce. Throughout the original trilogy, the Krogan arc was one of survival and redemption, especially under leaders like Urdnot Wrex, who sought to unite the clans and build a new future. Now, with external threats like the Reapers gone and the genophage possibly cured, the Krogan are finally free to decide their destiny, but that freedom may also reignite old rivalries.

A civil war among the Krogan could arise from several underlying tensions. The species’ warrior culture, rooted in pride and honor, may clash with efforts toward modernization or diplomacy. Some clans might push for reform and peaceful rebuilding, while others could demand a return to their traditional warrior ways. Leadership struggles may emerge if long-standing alliances crumble or new factions seek control of Tuchanka’s future. It’s also possible that outside forces, political or corporate, may exploit Krogan divisions for their own benefit, deepening the chaos.

If the next entry in the series is indeed centers on a Krogan Civil War, it would mark a significant shift in focus for the series. Previous games centered on galaxy-wide threats, but this storyline could explore the complex political and moral challenges of rebuilding after such devastation. The Krogan’s internal struggle would have galaxy-spanning consequences, affecting trade, diplomacy, and the fragile peace between species.
