During an interview in August, director Soulframe Liang mentioned that Phantom Blade Zero is designed to feel like a “playable kung fu movie,” with combat animations captured from real martial arts experts. Players will have access to 30 main weapons and more than 20 secondary weapons, which can be paired into customizable loadouts. Liang emphasized the variety of playstyles this system allows, noting that the game seeks to present Chinese kung fu culture at an unprecedented production scale.

The director described the experience as something between a Souls-like title and expansive role-playing games such as The Witcher. Unlike many modern games that conceal objectives behind minimal guidance, Phantom Blade Zero will feature tools such as a hand-drawn map to assist navigation. Liang explained that the focus is on storytelling and combat depth rather than overly complex exploration. In terms of progression, the game is structured with multiple levels of completion. Liang stated that an average player’s first run may only cover 30 to 40 percent of the total content, leaving large portions of optional areas undiscovered.

Phantom Blade Zero has been confirmed as a timed PlayStation 5 console exclusive following its latest appearance at The Game Awards 2025. The confirmation comes directly from a disclaimer displayed at the end of the newly released trailer, which also revealed the game’s official release date. According to the on-screen text, the action role-playing game will not be available on other consoles after a minimum period of 12 months from launch.

Phantom Blade Zero is set for release on September 9, 2026, for the PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.
