Microsoft has confirmed that the next gen Xbox will support multiple digital stores and will also be compatible with the existing Xbox game library.

In a new video announcement, Xbox president Sarah Bond revealed that Microsoft has established a strategic, multi-year agreement with AMD to co-engineer SoCs across a portfolio of devices, including its next gen consoles. She further said that both companies aim to deliver deeper visual quality, immersive gameplay, and AI-powered experiences, grounded in a platform designed for players, not tied to a single store or device, and fully compatible with the existing Xbox game library.

According to Bond, this initiative is all about building players a gaming platform that’s always with them, so they can play the games they want across devices anywhere they want. In this regard, the Xbox team is working closely with the Windows team in order to ensure that the operating system is best suited for gaming.

The Xbox president said that she looks forward to showing the community what is likely to be the next Xbox console, though she didn’t share when or where that will happen. Fans will therefore have to wait sometime longer to see what Microsoft has in store for the Xbox user base. The ROG Xbox Ally X appears to be the first step towards the company’s new direction.

Recently, Xbox user reported that their entire console library had appeared on the PC Xbox store all of a sudden. While the games were not available to download and install, achievements earned from them did appear on the PC app. Whether Microsoft is using emulation to achieve full compatibility with the existing Xbox game library has not yet been confirmed, though a recent job listing for the position of Principal Software Engineer at Microsoft seems to point in that direction.
