The next entry in the Sonic series will have a stronger focus on the story and closer ties to upcoming movies and shows, according to a new rumor.

Twitter/X user thevscooper, who is known for sharing exclusive scoops and rumors from the world of movies and entertainment, has claimed that the next Sonic game will have a stronger focus on the story and closer ties to upcoming movies and series. They added that the unannounced title is aiming to be the biggest original entry in the series and to stand alongside the biggest game releases, with a larger playable ensemble and long-term support.

According to the source, the unannounced Sonic the Hedgehog game is currently targeting a release window of 2027. They clarified that it is not a remake or direct sequel, and that its live service status is unclear as of now. They mentioned that the game appears to be a long-term project that will support future movies and series. As per them, characters that appears in upcoming Sonic movies and series are set to appear in the game. Sega and Paramount Pictures have allegedly been working to establish this kind of synergy across mediums for the Sonic franchise.

The insider further said that the unannounced Sonic game will be in 3D, though an unverified source has claimed that some 2D integration or hybrid gameplay is also being considered. Furthermore, they mentioned that it will feature a modernized art style.

Back in September, 2023, during a Tokyo Game Show 2023 panel consisting of representatives from Sega, Capcom, and Square Enix, Sonic Producer Takashi Iizuka stated that he wanted to coincide game releases with other media projects.
