Nintendo Clarifies Switch 2 Five Million Sales Leak as Erroneous Website Test Data

by Salal Awan

Nintendo has issued a clarification after reports surfaced claiming that the Nintendo Switch 2 had surpassed five million units sold during its debut month. According to industry analyst David Gibson, who directly contacted the company, Nintendo confirmed that data recently visible on its website was, in fact, test data and was not reflective of final sales figures.

Gibson shared the company’s statement through social media, quoting Nintendo as saying, It appears that test data prepared for a website update was unintentionally made publicly accessible. Temporarily visible data was for testing purposes only, and is not accurate, and not related to any sales result or projection of Switch 2.

Earlier reports had suggested a historic milestone for Nintendo’s next-generation console, with over five million units purportedly sold globally in June 2025. That provisional breakdown included strong performance in the Americas, Japan, Europe, and other markets, with a record-setting pace in the United States, where more than 1.1 million units were claimed to have been sold in the first week alone. These figures rapidly drew attention, especially as they would have outpaced the original Nintendo Switch’s 2.74 million launch units in March 2017.

However, Nintendo has now moved to dispel these claims, emphasizing that the figures were published incorrectly as part of a website update and should not be considered an official result. Nevertheless, anticipation for the final confirmed numbers remains high, with Gibson himself adding that he expects Switch 2 sales to reach approximately 5.4 million when results are officially announced on August 1st.

The early momentum for the Switch 2 has been considerable, even without the mistakenly reported data. Launch titles such as Mario Kart World, Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition have supported widespread consumer interest, continuing Nintendo’s hybrid console strategy into a new hardware generation. It is perhaps telling that even test figures generated so much excitement, underlining the intense market focus on Nintendo’s latest platform.
