Nintendo held a new Direct presentation on September 12, unveiling a wide range of titles scheduled for release on both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The broadcast coincided with the 40th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros., which debuted in Japan on September 13, 1985, and featured announcements tied to the franchise as well as updates from third-party publishers.
The event opened with Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario, who confirmed that Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will release together as a bundle for Nintendo Switch on October 2. The games will include updated resolution, new Storybook content, and an in-game music player. Nintendo Switch 2 owners will also gain access to a free update enabling 4K resolution. In addition, Miyamoto revealed that an animated feature titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled for worldwide release on April 3, 2026.
Several new Mario-related projects were also confirmed. Mario Tennis Fever will launch on Switch 2 on February 12, 2026, offering the largest roster in the series to date. A new Yoshi title, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, is planned for spring 2026. Nintendo further announced additional multiplayer content for Super Mario Bros. Wonder with a Switch 2 edition due in 2026. Commemorative activities will also take place at the Nintendo Museum in Kyoto, including a special light display and new ticket designs.
Beyond Mario-related announcements, the Direct highlighted upcoming first-party and partner projects. Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, the next entry in the tactical RPG series, is set for 2026 on Switch 2. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will release simultaneously on Switch and Switch 2 on December 4, 2025, alongside new amiibo figures. Other titles announced include Pokémon Pokopia, Kirby Air Riders, and a downloadable content expansion for Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Third-party publishers also contributed to the presentation. Capcom revealed Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline entry in the series, launching for Switch 2 on February 27, 2026. The presentation also featured updates on Hades II, arriving digitally on Switch 2 later this month, as well as Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, scheduled for March 13, 2026. Additional announcements included Suika Game Planet, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade.
Nintendo closed the event by highlighting upcoming releases for both Switch and Switch 2 through 2025 and 2026. These include Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, and One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 among many others. The company noted that select classic Virtual Boy titles will be added to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack in early 2026, requiring a new accessory modeled after the original hardware.
