Nintendo had made approximately 500,000 Switch 2 units available for pre-order on its My Nintendo store in Japan.

Inside-games.jp recently conducted a survey to gather the percentage of individuals who succeeded in placing a pre-order for the Nintendo Switch 2 out of the 2.2 million or so who had registered for the opportunity on the My Nintendo store in Japan. A total of 13,689 respondents participated in the survey, which was conducted on Twitter/X. As per the percentages derived from the large number of responses, 23.9% were successful in pre-ordering the upcoming console, while 76.1% were unable to do so.

Roughly speaking, around 1/4 of the respondents succeeded in winning the lottery, indicating that the number of overall applicants on the My Nintendo store were likely 4 times the size of those who managed to pre-order the Nintendo Switch 2. Using this ratio as an estimate,  it’s possible to derive that the those who succeeded in the lottery via the My Nintendo store in Japan were 4 times less than the 2.2 million applicants, resulting in the figure of 550,000.

It’s worth reminding our readers that the above calculation is only an estimate based on the survey participants, which aren’t necessarily representative of the actual ratio of lottery winners and losers. That said, the actual tally of winners in the first Nintendo Switch 2 lottery in Japan is likely to be in the ballpark of the estimate of 550,000. A second lottery sale has also been announced by the console maker, and some units will also be allocated to retail partners.

Among the lucky winners was one individual who said, “I was so confident about winning that I won the Switch 2 Mario Kart bundle. My kids were thrilled. I also won tickets to the pre-opening of Super Mario World at Universal Studios Japan, so I have a connection with Nintendo and Mario.” Meanwhile, a person among the losers said, “I was sure I would win, so the shock (of not winning) is tremendous.”
