Nintendo has officially announced the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie during its latest Direct presentation. Titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the project had been the subject of leaks earlier this week, when domain registrations hinted at the new title. The reveal now confirms those reports, setting the stage for the next chapter in Nintendo and Illumination’s blockbuster animated franchise.
The announcement follows the discovery of domains such as SuperMarioGalaxy-LaPelicula.com and SuperMarioGalaxy-LeFilm.com, which were registered by NBCUniversal and redirected to official Universal Pictures websites. The timing of the registrations, just before the Direct, strongly suggested the reveal was imminent. While some fans speculated the sequel might take the Super Mario World title, Nintendo has now made it clear that the upcoming film will instead draw from the beloved Galaxy entries in the Mario series.
The first Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in April 2023, defied industry expectations by grossing over 1.36 billion dollars worldwide. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, it became the highest-grossing video game adaptation in history and Illumination’s most profitable film to date. With such momentum behind the franchise, anticipation for the sequel is already high.
The new film is a co-production between Nintendo and Illumination. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are returning, along with screenwriter Matthew Fogel. Producers Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri are also reprising their roles, with Brian Tyler confirmed as the composer. The main voice cast will also be back, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled for release on April 3, 2026. With its name directly referencing one of Mario’s most acclaimed games, fans are eager to see how Nintendo and Illumination adapt the series’ cosmic setting to the big screen.
