Nintendo Reportedly Cuts Switch 2 Production by Over 30% Following Weaker US Demand

Nintendo is reportedly scaling back production of its Switch 2 console after demand in the United States fell short of expectations during the holiday season.

According to a Bloomberg report, the company now plans to produce around 4 million units in the current quarter, down from an initial target of 6 million. Sources familiar with the matter said the reduced output, which represents a cut of roughly one-third, is expected to continue into April. The individuals requested anonymity as the figures have not been made public.

The adjustment comes despite what has otherwise been a strong start for the system. Since its launch on June 5, 2025, the Switch 2 has sold approximately 17.37 million units, making it the fastest-selling console in Nintendo’s history and significantly outpacing the original Switch during its first year.

Performance, however, appears uneven across regions. While the console continues to perform strongly in Japan, where it remains a leading platform, sales in the US have reportedly not met internal expectations. This contrast has prompted Nintendo to reassess its short-term production strategy.

The Switch 2’s early success has been supported by major releases such as Mario Kart World and Pokémon Pokopia, both of which contributed to strong initial momentum. Even so, the reported production cut suggests the company is taking a more cautious approach as it navigates shifting demand in key markets.
