Nintendo Reportedly Using Internal Tactics to Identify Leakers Following Recent Rumors

by Ali Haider

Nintendo may be taking steps to identify internal sources of leaks, according to recent claims shared online by known content creator Nintendo Prime. The discussion follows a wave of rumors tied to unannounced projects, including alleged details surrounding upcoming Switch 2 titles.

Nintendo Prime stated, “I’ve now heard from 7(!) different people that Nintendo has officially employed the ‘spread some fake info internally’ to try and discover who’s leaking information.” The approach, often referred to as a “canary trap,” involves distributing slightly different pieces of false information to various internal groups in order to trace the origin of leaks.

He added that this would not be the first time such tactics have been used, noting, “This isn’t the first time they have done this.” While it remains unclear whether the move is a direct response to recent leaks or part of routine internal practices, the claim suggests that information flow within the company could tighten in the near term.

The broader conversation has been echoed by others, including Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly, who said, “yip both Nintendo and Rockstar employ this tactic,” describing it as a common practice across large companies handling sensitive product information.

Recent speculation around Nintendo has intensified following a major leak that allegedly detailed several unannounced projects, including a new Star Fox title and a potential remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. These reports remain unverified, and Nintendo has not issued any official comment regarding either the leaks or the alleged internal response.

If accurate, such measures could explain a potential slowdown in credible leaks, as companies often move to reinforce internal controls when high-profile information surfaces prematurely.
