Nintendo may actually be looking to release a Switch 2 dual screen accessory for NSO DS, 3DS, and possibly Wii U titles.
A patent published by Nintendo on September 4, 2025 (via Twitter/X user MikeOdysseyYT) suggests that the Switch 2 will receive a dual screen accessory for use with NSO DS, 3DS, and possibly Wii U titles. The patent is for a modular electronic device that appears to combine two separate units into one system. According to the filing, the design revolves around a pair of devices that can be attached and detached from each other depending on how the player wants to use them.

The first unit includes a display on its front along with a connection point that allows it to link up with the second unit. The second unit also features its own display on the front, while the back houses another connection point. What makes this design interesting is the way the two units connect; the second device can attach to the first in more than one orientation. In one setup, the back of the second device can snap onto the front of the first, effectively covering its screen.
This suggests that Nintendo is exploring a dual screen system where the arrangement of the devices changes how the system functions. Depending on how the units are attached, players may have access to one or two screens. As mentioned earlier, an accessory of this nature would be ideal for use with NSO DS, 3DS, and Wii U titles.
The Wii U had dedicated display on its tablet controller that offered a dual screen experience alongside the main display. Several first-party titles took advantage of the feature, but given the console’s limited success, it didn’t get much support from third-party developers. It was often used for having the menu/map screen being available on the handheld display while having the primary display for gameplay.
