Nintendo has released a brand new system update 16.0.1 for the Nintendo Switch that appears to be for system stability, but it makes some hidden changes internally.
The patch notes released by Nintendo indicate that stability is the only change included in the update. However, behind the scenes, a number of adjustments were made to the system to refine its functionality. For example, the bad words list was reorganized to minimize the number of erroneous blocks, and certain words were added or removed in various languages.
The BCAT system module was also altered, although specific details regarding the change were not disclosed. Based on the different reports, it can be assumed that the change was a bug fix, as no significant modifications were detected.
In addition to the firmware update, version 1.1.1 of NSO Game Boy was released with a minor tweak to the description for Kirby’s Dream Land 2. The original text, which described the characters Rick the Hamster, Kine the Fish, and Coo the Owl, was changed to “Rick, Kine and Coo, who look like a hamster, a fish, and an owl, respectively”.
Nintendo Switch System Update 16.0.1 Patch Notes
Ver. 16.0.1 (Released March 22, 2023)
- General system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience.
Nintendo Switch continues to get these stability updates that don’t appear to add anything meaningful to the game but does come with some hidden changes under the hood. The last major update for the system was released on February 20. This latest update contained a single notable change that was intended to enhance the user experience.
Firstly, the update includes a feature that replaced any user nickname that cannot be used with “???” which can then be updated from the profile settings. This is designed to prevent inappropriate or offensive usernames from being displayed in online gaming environments. It also provided general stability improvements just like the update today.
