Nintendo Warns Against Unlicensed USB-C Chargers for Switch 2

by Ali Haider

Nintendo has issued a clear advisory for owners of the newly released Nintendo Switch 2, cautioning against using unlicensed USB-C chargers. The company emphasized that unofficial accessories may damage the console, with some reports suggesting that cheap alternatives could even melt the charging port.

The warning came to light after a Switch 2 owner reported having their system repaired by Nintendo. While the repair was completed at no charge, the customer was explicitly told that only the official dock and AC adapter, or those carrying the “Official Nintendo Licensed Product” seal, should be used.

In its message, Nintendo stated, “To ensure optimal system performance, we recommend using the original dock and AC adapter (or an officially licensed AC adapter that displays an ‘Official Nintendo Licensed Product’ seal on their packaging) when charging your system or connecting it to a TV or monitor.” The company further explained that its warranty does not cover damage caused by third-party accessories.

The power delivery for modern gaming hardware is a delicate matter. While USB-C is a versatile standard, not every cable or adapter manages voltage in the same way. A poorly made charger can lead to overheating, permanent hardware damage, or unexpected performance issues.

Released on June 5, 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 maintains its predecessor’s hybrid design while offering enhanced performance and full backward compatibility. Owners can transfer their digital libraries and use existing game cards, ensuring a smooth transition.

With the console now in the hands of players worldwide, Nintendo’s advisory reminds us that using licensed accessories, though potentially more expensive, is the safest way to protect the device from preventable damage.
