Nintendo’s Donkey Kong Film Reportedly Targeting 2028 Launch

by Salal Awan

A new claim from online commentator MyTimeToShineHello suggests that Nintendo’s expected Donkey Kong movie is already in production and is aiming for a 2028 release. The post quickly grabbed attention on social media, saying the project is underway, even though the source has been hit-or-miss with past scoops. The leaker has shared correct information before, but their overall record isn’t perfect, so the report isn’t confirmed for now.

The Donkey Kong film has been a hot topic in industry circles ever since The Super Mario Bros. Movie brought in huge box office numbers and expanded Nintendo’s animation goals. Nintendo and Universal Pictures have both confirmed a standalone Donkey Kong project through earlier filings, establishing that the movie is officially being developed. Seth Rogen is slated to voice Donkey Kong again, keeping his portrayal from the 2023 Mario film.

The rumored 2028 release would fit nicely into Nintendo’s recently laid out movie schedule. The company is currently preparing for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to come out on April 3, 2026, followed by a live-action The Legend of Zelda adaptation scheduled for May 7, 2027. In recent talks with investors, Nintendo stated that it is setting up a framework for a consistent release pace, which suggests more films are being planned beyond the ones already announced.

The Donkey Kong movie is expected to be another step in growing Nintendo’s cinematic universe, falling in line with the company’s bigger push to adapt its main franchises using different studios and formats. Since the film is still early in its development, and Nintendo hasn’t given out official details yet, the reported 2028 date is just speculation. However, given the strong momentum behind Nintendo’s film strategy, a dedicated Donkey Kong adventure is likely to become one of the company’s next big theatrical releases.
