KOEI TECMO and Team NINJA have announced that Nioh 3 has surpassed 1 million copies sold worldwide across PS5 and PC via Steam. According to the publisher, the latest entry reached the milestone faster than any previous title in the series. Alongside the announcement, the Nioh franchise has now exceeded 10 million copies sold in total.
In Nioh 3, players step into the role of Tokugawa Takechiyo during Japan’s Edo period. As he prepares to become the next shogun, his younger brother Tokugawa Kunimatsu falls under the influence of a dark force and leads an army of yokai in a bid to seize power. With the assistance of the Guardian Spirit Kusanagi, Takechiyo travels across time in an effort to restore order and secure Japan’s future.
The game’s story spans multiple eras and regions, including Edo Castle, the Totomi region during the Warring States period, Kyoto during the Heian era, and the Bakumatsu period, marking the first time this era has appeared in the franchise. These locations are presented as expansive open fields that players can freely explore.
Combat introduces two interchangeable styles that can be switched during battle. Samurai Style builds on the series’ traditional grounded combat, adding an Arts Proficiency system to enhance Martial Arts abilities as well as a Deflect mechanic that allows players to counter enemy attacks with precise timing. Ninja Style focuses on mobility, enabling quick dodges and aerial maneuvers alongside Ninjutsu techniques. It also introduces abilities such as Mist, which leaves behind an afterimage to distract enemies, and Evade, which helps players narrowly avoid incoming strikes.
Nioh 3 is available in multiple editions, including a Standard Edition and a Digital Deluxe Edition that includes exclusive in game items and a Season Pass granting access to 2 upcoming DLC expansions. A physical SteelBook Launch Edition is also available, along with a PS5 exclusive TREASURE BOX that includes the base game, a Scampuss Furball Netsuke Charm Keychain, original desk pad, official artbook, and selection soundtrack CD.
A free demo is currently available on PS5 and PC, allowing players to try the opening portion of the game.
