A former Ubisoft artist has revealed that an original Rayman remake was once in development but was ultimately canceled in 2021. According to visual effects artist Phong, who briefly worked on the project during his time at Ubisoft, the game went under the titles Rayman: Forever and The Story of Rayman before it was quietly shelved.
As part of early production, Ubisoft reportedly invested resources into reimagining the game’s visual identity. Concept work included multiple iterations of logo designs and a reworked home screen, reflecting the studio’s ambition to properly honor the franchise that helped establish the company in the mid-1990s. Rayman was, after all, the original flagship title for Ubisoft, first released in 1995 and widely credited with laying the foundation for the company’s growth.
Phong, who previously contributed to titles such as Age of Empires: Definitive Edition and League of Legends, explained that his involvement with the Rayman project came in the form of a trial assignment. Despite progress in visual research and artistic direction, he confirmed that the game did not move forward. Following the project’s cancellation, he transitioned to working with Sky Mavis on Axie Origins and Axie Infinity: Homeland.
The Rayman franchise has long been celebrated for its imaginative platforming worlds and distinctive artistic style. Across nearly three decades, it has produced more than 40 entries spanning various platforms and genres. The mainline series, however, has remained dormant since the release of Rayman Legends in 2013, with fans frequently speculating about a potential revival.
While Ubisoft has not officially commented on the reported remake, this revelation sheds light on at least one attempt to bring the franchise back. Whether the company will revisit Rayman in the future remains uncertain, but the existence of Rayman: Forever and The Story of Rayman suggests there has been genuine interest in restoring the limbless hero to modern gaming audiences.
