During a Q&A session at a recent shareholder meeting (via yna.co.kr), Pearl Abyss CEO Heo Jin-young directly addressed player feedback surrounding Crimson Desert, acknowledging criticism regarding the game’s story. “We partially agree with the disappointment users feel regarding the story. We also wish we could have done better,” he said.

Heo explained that while the development team attempted to address narrative shortcomings late in production, they ultimately chose to prioritize gameplay, adding, “The [team] tried to fill in the gaps within the limited time remaining, but ultimately we focused on strengthening gameplay, which is our core strength.” Despite these concerns, Crimson Desert has received commercial success since launch, topping Steam’s sales charts, reaching 240,000 concurrent players, and surpassing 3 million copies sold within just four days. Building on this momentum, he emphasized that ongoing updates will play a key role in shaping the game’s future. “We will further improve the game through continuous patches, such as refining controls based on user feedback,” he stated.

For now, Pearl Abyss appears to be prioritizing free updates over monetization through paid downloadable content. While the possibility of DLC remains open, Heo indicated that the company is more focused on expanding the game in ways that drive additional sales of the base game. “We want to make strategic decisions that help the main version of Crimson Desert sell well,” he noted. The CEO also discussed other topics, including mod support and accessibility. While modding could be a “strong advantage” due to the game’s sandbox nature, no concrete plans are currently in place due to the technical challenges involved. Meanwhile, improvements to the user experience are reportedly being prioritized to lower the barrier to entry for new players.

The Pearl Abyss CEO further stated that the company hopes to soon report 5 million copies sold. “Next time, we aim to quickly inform shareholders of reaching 5 million sales, and all employees will strive to achieve the best possible performance by the end of the year,” he said.
