Xbox Game Studios and Playground Games’ upcoming action role-playing game, Fable, may miss its 2026 release window, with a possible delay to the year 2027.

During the latest episode of The XboxEra Podcast, the crew was asked about the lineup of first-party Xbox titles for 2026, and whether the release of Gears of War: E-Day and Fable are guaranteed for next year. In response, co-host Shpeshal Nick said that he doesn’t believe Playground Games’ upcoming action role-playing game will see the light of day in 2026.

Based on what Nick’s sources have told him, Fable will not be released in 2026. He added that he’s heard it from two different people that the game may slip to 2027, and that’s not due to some sort of doom and gloom situation or development hell issues. According to him, development of Playground Games’ action role-playing game is just taking a little bit longer than expected.

Back in February, 2025, Microsoft confirmed that Fable will launch in 2026 instead of its previously announced 2025 release window. The news was shared by Craig Duncan, Head of Xbox Game Studios, during an Xbox podcast where he expressed confidence in Playground Games and the progress they have made on the project. “So, I just want to start with really excited, really excited about progress, really excited where Playground are, ” says Duncan. “We previously announced the date for Fable as 2025, we are actually going to give Fable more time and it’s going to ship in 2026 now. While I know that’s not maybe the news people want to hear, what I want to assure people of is that it’s definitely worth the wait. And I just, I have unequivocal confidence in the Playground team.”

Duncan reassured fans that the additional development time will lead to a more polished and refined experience. He said that the delay is in the best interest of both the game and the players.
