PlayStation 5 Sales Surpass 80 Million Units, Narrowing the Gap with PS4

Sony has officially confirmed that PlayStation 5 lifetime hardware sales have reached 80.2 million units as of the end of Q1 FY25, placing the console just two million units shy of the PlayStation 4’s 82.3 million mark at the same point in its lifecycle. This data comes from Sony’s latest financial report for the Game & Network Services division.

In the first quarter alone, Sony shipped 2.5 million PS5 units, marking a modest 4.17 percent year-over-year increase from the 2.4 million units sold in Q1 FY24. While the hardware growth remains steady, the software side has shown much stronger momentum.

PlayStation software sales for the quarter reached 65.9 million units, a notable 23 percent rise compared to the 53.6 million units recorded a year earlier. First-party titles contributed 6.9 million units, up from 6.0 million. The shift toward digital distribution has also intensified, with 83 percent of full-game sales made through digital downloads, up from 80 percent the previous year.

From a financial standpoint, Sony’s Game & Network Services segment generated 936.5 billion yen in revenue, an 8 percent year-on-year increase. Operating income surged by 127 percent, indicating improved profitability across the board. Hardware brought in 153.3 billion yen, while game software contributed 540.2 billion yen. Network services, including PlayStation Plus and other digital offerings, generated 172.6 billion yen.

However, the PlayStation Network saw a slight decline in monthly active users, dropping from 124 million in Q4 FY24 to 123 million in Q1 FY25. Despite this dip, overall engagement remains high.

Sony also highlighted several key lifetime sales figures for its top-selling PlayStation exclusives. God of War (2018) leads the pack at 23 million units sold. Horizon Zero Dawn has surpassed 20 million units across all editions, while Ghost of Tsushima follows with over 13 million units. Other major titles include Marvel’s Spider-Man with 13.2 million and The Last of Us Part II, which has sold more than 4 million copies.

With PlayStation 5 now narrowing the gap with PS4 in total hardware sales, and with digital adoption continuing to climb, Sony appears to be in a strong position heading into the remainder of the fiscal year.
