The rumored PlayStation handheld will offer slightly better raster and much better ray tracing performance than the Xbox Series S, it is claimed.
Known hardware insider KeplerL2 took to the gaming enthusiast NeoGAF forums to respond to a fellow member who mentioned reading conflicting thoughts on performance comparisons between the PlayStation handheld and the Xbox Series S, with some suggesting that the former is powerful and others indicating that it isn’t. In their response, the insider claimed that the PlayStation handheld GPU is a little better of Xbox Series S in terms of raster performance and much better in terms of ray tracing/path tracing performance. “GPU is a bit ahead of XSS in raster (and ofc massively ahead in RT/PT),” they said.
Furthermore, in response to a question regarding the new PSSR iteration being much better than the current DLSS solution available on Nintendo Switch 2, the insider clarified that Nintendo’s new console only supports DLSS 2, which is based on the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model. They added that some games even use the inferior “DLSS Lite” version. Meanwhile, according to them, FSR5 and PSSR3 will offer better image quality than even DLSS 4.5, which is based on the Transformer model.
In another NeoGAF thread, the same insider claimed that the PS6 will come with a 1TB Gen5 NVMe SSD and no disc drive. When this was met with disappointment by a fellow member, they clairified that it’s the most obvious area for Sony Interactive Entertainment to cut costs. They speculated that if the PS6 SDK supports neural texture compression, its game sizes could see a reduction in from those of PS5. As for the alleged lack of a hard drive on the PS6, it was said that the console will come with the option to attach a drive that will be sold separately, as is already the case with the Digital edition PS5 slim as well as the PS5 Pro.
