Meanwhile, Hulst mentioned that it’s important to realize Sony Interactive Entertainment is really thoughtful about bringing its franchises to other platforms in order to reach new audiences, and that the company has taken a very measured and deliberate approach in doing this. He highlighted the single-player first-party franchises as the console maker’s tentpole titles, and referred to them as a major point of differentiation for the PlayStation console. According to Hulst, they’re the real showcases of the performance and quality of the hardware. As such, the executives want to ensure that players got the best experience from these titles. In that regard, the company is very thoughtful about how and if it brings these titles to other platforms.

In response to a question regarding investor speculation about Microsoft moving away from the console business, and how that would affect PlayStation, Nishino said that competition in the business is healthy and that it pushes innovation. However, according to him, Sony Interactive Entertainment remains confident and committed to its current strategy. He added that there isn’t an urgent need for the company to pivot, though it will continue to monitor play patterns.
