Pokémon Champions Launches April 8 on Switch

The Pokémon Company has announced that Pokémon Champions will launch on April 8 for the Nintendo Switch. The title will also be playable on Nintendo Switch 2, where it will receive enhanced visual performance through a free update available at launch. Players will need to connect online and download the update to access these improvements.

Positioned as a free-to-start experience, Pokémon Champions centers on competitive online battles. The game builds on familiar systems from the mainline RPG series, including type matchups, Abilities, and move sets, allowing players to develop layered strategies using mechanics they already know.

At its core, the game focuses on head-to-head competition, offering both Single Battles and Double Battles. Players assemble a team of six Pokémon and engage in turn-based encounters, with tactical options such as switching mid-battle and using transformations like Mega Evolution playing a key role. Success will depend heavily on moment to moment decision making and team composition.

Players can recruit Pokémon in a couple of ways. Integration with the Pokémon HOME app allows certain creatures transferred from other Pokémon titles, as well as Pokémon GO, to be used in Champions. Alternatively, players can obtain a random Pokémon each day, which remains available for a limited time. A currency known as Victory Points can be used to recruit additional Pokémon, including permanent additions to a player’s roster.

The game features multiple online modes designed for different playstyles. Ranked Battles allow players to compete against similarly skilled opponents, while Casual Battles provide a more relaxed environment without tracked results. Private Battles enable matches with friends through room codes, and seasonal Online Competitions will introduce rotating rule sets.

Victory Points also serve as a progression system, letting players customize and strengthen their teams. This includes adjusting moves, Abilities, stat distributions, and other attributes. The in game shop will offer additional items such as held equipment, Mega Stones, music tracks, and cosmetic options for trainers.

For those looking for extra content, a paid bundle will be available that expands storage capacity and includes additional items and bonuses. A Premium Battle Pass and membership option will also be offered within the game.
