Following the announcement that Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version are coming to Nintendo Switch on February 27, The Pokémon Company has shared additional details on how the classic titles will function on modern hardware.
The upcoming releases will largely match the content of their original Game Boy Advance versions, though certain specifications have been adjusted due to hardware differences. Connectivity features that previously relied on the Game Boy Advance Game Link cable or Wireless Adapter will now operate through the built-in local wireless connection available on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 systems.
Players will be able to access the Pokémon Wireless Club located on the second floor of a Pokémon Center, where up to four participants can connect locally. Through the Union Room, players can trade Pokémon, battle, or take part in a minigame, similar to how these features worked in the original release. Online play will not be supported.
A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to purchase or play either title. The games will be available as standalone digital releases on the Nintendo eShop and are not planned for inclusion in the Game Boy Advance Nintendo Classics collection. Physical versions will not be offered.
Each title will also be released in separate language versions, reflecting how the games were originally distributed during the Game Boy Advance era. In the Americas, English, European French, and European Spanish versions will be available. Players are encouraged to verify the language before purchasing, with support available in the event of an incorrect selection.
While both titles will run on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, there are no major performance differences between the two platforms. On Switch 2, players will also be able to use the GameChat feature while playing.
Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version will be available digitally following the Pokémon Presents broadcast on February 27.
