Nintendo, The Pokemon Company, and Game Freak’s role-playing games, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, are set to be ported over to the Switch, it is claimed.

Pokemon fan and insider Riddler_Khu (via CentroLeaks) recently took to Twitter/X to tease that Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen will be re-released for Nintendo Switch sometime soon. Subsequently, a different leaker clarified that these new versions will be paid releases available on the eShop, and will not be part of the Nintendo Switch Online catalog of classic games. It was also said that they will feature HOME compatibility.

While no specifics were provided regarding possible graphical upgrades, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are expected to feature modern visuals, with more detailed assets and an HD resolution.\

For the uninitiated, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are updated versions of the original 1996 role-playing games Pokemon Red and Blue. Developed by Game Freak and released by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance, these remakes launched in Japan in January 2004, followed by North American and European releases in September and October of the same year. As part of the franchise’s third generation, they marked the first time earlier Pokémon titles were remade with expanded features and improvements.

Like earlier entries in the series, the games use an overhead viewpoint where players guide their character through the world and engage in strategic, turn-based battles. Players catch and train Pokémon to build a team for combat. The adventure takes place in the Kanto region and introduces additions such as a built-in help system and access to a new location known as the Sevii Islands, which becomes available after defeating the Elite Four and the Champion. The titles also support multiplayer connectivity through the Game Boy Advance Wireless Adapter, which was initially packaged with the games.
