The Pokémon Company has announced that Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the latest entry in the long-running franchise, has achieved a remarkable milestone of 5.8 million units sold worldwide within its first week of release. The game, which launched globally on October 16, 2025, is available on both the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2, with roughly half of total sales attributed to the enhanced version for Nintendo Switch 2. The figures, based on internal data from Nintendo Co., Ltd., include both physical and digital sales.
Developed by Game Freak, Pokémon Legends: Z-A represents a significant evolution in the series formula, introducing a real-time battle system that blends traditional Pokémon combat with action-oriented gameplay. This hybrid approach, described by The Pokémon Company as a fusion of “Battle × Action,” marks the first time in franchise history that players directly control Pokémon in dynamic, real-time encounters.
Set in the futuristic Lumiose City, the game reimagines the iconic Kalos region through an urban redevelopment narrative. During the day, players can explore various districts and “Wild Zones” seamlessly integrated into the city using advanced technology, where wild Pokémon roam freely. At night, the environment transforms, revealing the ZA Royale, a large-scale battle event featuring intense Trainer-versus-Trainer competitions marked by glowing red holograms across the city.
The Pokémon Company expressed gratitude for the game’s strong reception, noting that sales figures reflect not only global enthusiasm for the franchise but also growing adoption of the Nintendo Switch 2 platform. The company stated, “Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A, which launched globally on Thursday, October 16, 2025, has achieved worldwide sales of 5.8 million units in its first week. Approximately half of these sales were for the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game.”
The game has reportedly achieved 1.48 million sales in Japan, showing strong results for both the original Switch and its successor, Switch 2.
With such strong early sales and an ambitious new gameplay direction, Pokémon Legends: Z-A stands as one of the most successful Pokémon launches in recent years, reaffirming the enduring global appeal of the series and its ability to evolve while maintaining its core identity.
