Retail sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Pokémon Legends Z-A have surpassed one million units in Japan, marking a significant milestone for The Pokémon Company and Nintendo’s newer hardware. According to the latest sales data, the title has now become only the second Switch 2 game to cross the one million retail sales threshold in the Japanese market, following Mario Kart World.
Pokémon Legends Z-A launched on October 16, 2025, as a dual release for both the original Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2. As of December 28, 2025, retail sales for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition reached 1,004,154 units in Japan, up from 612,905 units recorded earlier in its launch window. This places it firmly among the strongest-performing Switch 2 titles to date, despite the platform still being relatively early in its lifecycle.
When combined with the original Nintendo Switch version, Pokémon Legends Z-A has achieved even broader reach. The Switch version recorded 1,529,823 retail units sold in Japan as of December 28, 2025, bringing total physical sales across both platforms to well over 2.5 million units.
Pokémon Legends Z-A builds on the gameplay foundation established by Pokémon Legends Arceus, shifting the setting from the open landscapes of Hisui to the dense urban environment of Lumiose City. Developed by Game Freak, the title emphasizes real-time combat mechanics and city-focused exploration. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition offers enhanced performance, including higher frame rates and 4K resolution, which has likely contributed to its strong adoption rate among early Switch 2 owners.
The sales milestone also highlights the broader success of the Nintendo Switch 2 software lineup in Japan. Mario Kart World remains the platform’s top performer, with retail sales reaching 2,668,381 units as of December 28, 2025. Released alongside the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, the title became Japan’s best-selling game of the year, setting a high benchmark for subsequent releases.
