The Pokemon Company, Creatures Inc. and DeNA’s free-to-play mobile game, Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket, is scheduled to receive a major new update later this year in 2025.
In its first quarter report for fiscal year 2025, Japanese provider of mobile portal and e-commerce websites DeNA revealed that Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket will receive a major update later this year. As per the report, the game’s Monthly Average Users (MAU) for the first quarter was approximately 39 million, with about 60% of the virtual currency consumption coming from international users. Furthermore, it is mentioned that subscriptions have continued to see a steady demand. In-game events, new booster packs, and other updates have also been released on a continuous basis.

According to the report, new user acquisition for Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket remains steady. However, the retention rate of existing users has declined compared to the initial launch period. Maintaining MAU is a priority for the company, and it has recognized initiatives to improve retention rate and login frequency, such as enhancement of collection experience, as key objectives. Based on this understanding, planning and development for a major update are underway at DeNA, targeting release within the calendar year. The company will share further details with Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket users sometime later.
Recently, The Pokemon Company faced allegations of plagiarism involving two cards in Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket, just hours ahead of the launch of the new expansion set Wisdom of Sea and Sky. In its official response, the company acknowledged a production error involving the illustrations for the 3-Star Ho-Oh EX and Lugia EX cards and announced immediate corrective actions. According to the published notice, internal review revealed that the Ho-Oh illustration had been created using incorrect reference materials, which had been mistakenly supplied as official documentation to the illustrator involved.
