Prototype Remaster Is Allegedly In The Works

by Muhammad Ali Bari

A remaster of Activison and Radical Entertainment’s 2009 action-adventure game, Prototype, may be in development.

One of the original modders for Prototype recently data mined (via Reddit user StanleyMitchel) the most recent update for the game and uncovered some interesting changes that hint at the possibility of a remaster being in development. Among the findings were several test maps that were not part of the original release, as well as a surprising number of new names added to the game’s credits. These changes stand out, considering the game has not received meaningful updates in years. The updated credits can be viewed here.

While the inclusion of test maps may also suggest internal development experiments, the revised credits are an even stronger hint at the possibility of a Prototype remaster. Updated credits typically acknowledge new staff contributions, often tied to ongoing or upcoming projects.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time rumors of the franchise’s revival have surfaced this year. Back in April, 2025, an alleged playtester claimed that a new Prototype game was in development. While that claim was unverified, the latest findings seem to lend credibility to the idea that Activision may have renewed interest in the IP.

Prototype was originally released in June, 2009, for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Windows. The game was later reissued in July, 2015, as part of the Prototype Biohazard Bundle for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with standalone digital versions of both games following in August, 2015. The story follows Alex Mercer, a shapeshifter suffering from amnesia, who struggles to contain a viral outbreak known as Blacklight in Manhattan. The infection transforms people into dangerous, mutated creatures. Alongside battling the virus, Alex seeks to uncover the truth about his past while clashing with both the U.S. military and a covert task force called Blackwatch. Outside of the central narrative, the game features an open world setting where players can freely roam and participate in side missions and activities.
