Sony has announced a new system software update for the PlayStation Portal, introducing a higher quality 1080p streaming option alongside a series of usability improvements. The update is set to roll out globally beginning March 18, with availability starting March 17 in select regions depending on time zones.
The headline addition is a new 1080p High Quality mode for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. This setting increases the bitrate compared to the standard 1080p option, resulting in a clearer and more stable image during gameplay. Players can enable it through the Quick Menu under Max Resolution, though a session restart is required for the change to take effect.
Sony is also refining the Cloud Streaming experience with several interface improvements aimed at making navigation more intuitive. A redesigned product detail page now allows users to choose specific titles from bundled listings before launching a stream. Players will also receive clearer on-screen alerts when game invites arrive during a streaming session, reducing the chances of missing multiplayer opportunities.
Additional tweaks include updated trophy notifications that now display the trophy name and image more prominently, with platinum trophies receiving a distinct animation. The search function has also been adjusted, with the on-screen keyboard appearing immediately to streamline the process.
Beyond streaming enhancements, the update introduces a more straightforward onboarding flow for new users. Account creation and sign-in can now be completed by scanning a QR code with a mobile device, simplifying the initial setup process.
Sony noted that engagement with the PlayStation Portal continues to grow, with cloud streaming usage seeing a significant increase and a large portion of users subscribing to PlayStation Plus Premium. This latest update appears focused on improving both visual quality and overall ease of use as the platform continues to expand its audience.
