PS5 Digital Edition Hardware Revision Reportedly Reduces SSD Storage Back To 825 GB

A new PS5 Digital Edition hardware revision is reportedly on the horizon, and it reduces the SSD storage size back to the launch model’s 825 GB.

According to Dealabs leaker billbil-kun, certification documents from Japanese regulatory authorities reveal the upcoming CFI-2100 series (Chassis E), the successor to last year’s Slim redesign. While the new PS5 hardware revision appears to make no major design changes, it does include one unexpected downgrade, a reduced SSD storage on the Digital Edition.

Since its launch in 2020, the PS5 has gone through several hardware revisions, each aimed at improving cooling, power efficiency, or manufacturing costs. The November, 2023, release of the D-model marked the arrival of the PS5 Slim, which not only shrank the system’s footprint but also upgraded storage from the original 825 GB SSD to a more spacious 1 TB drive. Both the Digital Edition and the Standard Edition benefited from this increase in storage capacity.

However, the aforementioned storage improvement is now being reverted. With the CFI-2100 (Model E), Sony Interactive Entertainment is reportedly reducing storage on the Digital Edition back to 825 GB, while the Standard Edition will retain its 1 TB SSD. Packaging for the European version clearly states “825 GB,” alongside the usual 4K and HDR branding.

In Europe, the PS5 Digital Edition has already increased in price from €399 at launch in 2020 to €499 in April, 2025, a €100 increase in less than five years. The leaker’s information suggest that Sony Interactive Entertainment opted to cut SSD storage size rather than impose yet another price hike.

For now, this change appears to apply only to the European market. The CFI-2116 model of the PS5 Slim Digital Edition will release on September 13, 2025, at the current €499 price point, with the Standard Slim model expected to follow later. Whether other regions will see the same SSD reduction remains to be seen.
