PS5 Price Is A Large “Barrier” In The Way Of Monster Hunter Wilds Sales, According To Capcom

The retail price of the PS5 is a large “barrier” in the way of sales of Monster Hunter Wilds, according to Capcom.

During an interview with Nikkei Gaming (via Twitter/X user Genki_JPN) conducted in May, 2025, Capcom President Haruhiro Tsujimoto talked about the present and future of the company, its goals, and the challenges facing the gaming industry. In response to a question regarding the publisher’s plans to build on the 10 million unit sales of Monster Hunter Wilds, he said that he found the “PS5 barrier” to be unexpectedly large.

Tsujimoto mentioned that the base PS5 costs about 80,000 Yen in Japan. According to him, when the cost of software and monthly subscriptions is factored in, it comes to about 100,000 yen at the time of purchase. He said that this is not an amount that can be easily reached, especially for younger generations. He believes that this situation is not limited to Japan, but is also present overseas.

The Capcom President sees overcoming these obstacles and getting Monster Hunter Wilds to as many people as possible as its next challenge. He brought up future discounts, saying that he is currently formulating a strategy to take advantage of these opportunities to boost sales throughout the year.

Tsujimoto also highlighted that the Nintendo Switch 2 was released in June, 2025, at a price of 49,980 Yen, and that the response was better than Capcom had expected. While prices vary by country, this reaffirmed a high level of cost-consciousness among ordinary consumers to him.

Last month, during a Q&A session on the occasion of its first quarter consolidated financial results conference call for the Fiscal Year ending March 31, 2026, Capcom revealed that sales of Monster Hunter Wilds during the quarter fell short of its initial expectations. Read about it here.

Monster Hunter Wilds was released on February 28, 2025, for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC.
