Sony’s recently announced PlayStation 5 price adjustments have led to sharp increases across all major regions, though the impact appears most pronounced in Japan, where the console’s price has nearly doubled compared to its original launch cost.
Based on updated pricing, the standard PS5 in Japan has risen from ¥49,980 to ¥97,980, reflecting an increase of ¥48,000 or 96.0%. The Digital Edition has seen an even steeper climb, moving from ¥39,980 to ¥89,980, a jump of ¥50,000 or 125.1%. By comparison, the PS5 Pro in Japan has experienced a more moderate increase of 15.0%, now priced at ¥137,980.
In contrast, other regions have seen more restrained adjustments. In the United States, the standard PS5 has increased from $499.99 to $649.99, marking a 30.0% rise, while the Digital Edition has gone up by 50.0% to $599.99. The PS5 Pro now stands at $899.99, up 28.6%. Similar trends are visible in the United Kingdom and Europe, where percentage increases generally range between 12.5% and 50.0%, depending on the model.
Sony previously confirmed that the new pricing will take effect on April 2, 2026, citing continued pressure in the global economic environment as the primary reason for the adjustment. The company indicated that rising costs have made the increase necessary to sustain the production and distribution of its hardware.
While price hikes are evident worldwide, the scale of the increase in Japan stands out. The Digital Edition, in particular, now costs more than double its launch price, making it one of the most significant regional shifts in pricing since the PS5 first entered the market.
