PS5 Pro PSSR 1 vs PSSR 2 System Toggle Upscaling Comparison Shows Improved Image Quality Across The Board

A comparison between the earlier PSSR 1 and the new PSSR 2 upscaling for the PS5 Pro enabled via the system toggle reveals improvements to image quality across the board.

Sony Interactive Entertainment released a new PS5 system update today, bringing the option to upgrade from PSSR 1 to the new PSSR 2 in supported games on PS5 Pro via a new system toggle. The new algorithm focuses on improving motion clarity and reducing artifacts seen on objects with finer detail, such as fences as well as foliage. We’ve put together a screenshot comparison using games that currently support the original iteration of the upscaling technology. The added system toggle allows the PS5 Pro to override the internal version with the new PSSR 2. Read ahead for further details.

It’s worth noting that the improvements in image quality are more apparent in motion as compared to screenshots. PSSR 1 tends to exhibit moire artifacts on overlapping detail and shimmering on foliage. That said, it’s still possible to appreciate the improved resolution of finer detail and crisper overall look with the PSSR 2 system toggle override in games that internally use PSSR 1.

After the arrival of the new PS5 system update, Truck Driver: American Dream developer Koralsky took to gaming enthusiast forum Reset Era to share some technical stats on PSSR 1 and PSSR 2. The stats revealed that the new upscaler takes slightly less render time on the GPU while renders more pixels, suggesting that it may deliver slightly better performance in like-for-like scenarios.

In addition to visual improvements, the new PS5 system update expands customization options within the Welcome hub, including new display modes and background features. General usability, messaging, and system stability have also been refined, making the overall experience feel more polished. Read about it here.
