The PSSR 2 update for Sony Interactive Entertainment’s mid-gen console, the PS5 Pro, is set to arrive sometime between January and March, 2026.
Twitter/X user Gust_FAN, who is known for providing PlayStation-related updates, has shared a summary of rumors regarding the upcoming PSSR 2 update for the PS5 Pro. According to their information, the update will be available sometime during January and March, 2026, and it will implement an upscaling algorithm very similar to FSR4.
By leveraging AMD FSR4 technology, the PSSR 2 update for PS5 Pro will improve both image quality and performance compared to before. Frame rates are expected to receive a noteworthy boost, even for games that previously ran in the 70 to 80 fps range.
Furthermore, based on the rumored details, “low resolution classic games” will also be upscaled to a higher resolution. This likely means that the spacial upscaler used to enhance PS4 titles that didn’t receive a PS4 Pro upgrade will now be replaced by a version of PSSR 2, significantly boosting image quality.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has allegedly prepared new debugging tools for developers in order to facilitate the implementation of PSSR 2. This was also mentioned by a developer who content creator and hardware insider Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID) recently spoke to. According to the developer, one of the most noteworthy additions to the tools is a debug application called PSML Replay, which the console maker has reportedly distributed to developers to aid them in identifying and fixing artifacting issues caused by PSSR in existing games. The developer explained, “There is an application called PSML Replay that Sony has given us for debugging glitches that pop up from PSSR. So, Sony is aware that there are multiple big releases that have PSSR artifacting issues, and they are working on it. In fact, by now Sony has more tools for PSSR than AMD does for FSR 3 or FSR 4.”
