PS5 Pro Upscaling Gives Bloodborne a Slight Resolution Boost: Here’s How It Looks

by Salal Awan

Bloodborne remains one of the few PS4 exclusives without a release on other platforms, but it appears to gain a slight enhancement on the PS5 Pro.

As previously reported, the PS5 Pro includes a new “Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games” toggle, aimed at improving the resolution of select PS4 titles. According to early impressions from a user who accessed the PS5 Pro ahead of its official release, Bloodborne benefits from this feature, showing a minor resolution boost via AI upscaling. While it’s uncertain if this enhancement extends beyond upscaling, Sony has confirmed that the PS5 Pro’s boost mode primarily focuses on resolution improvements for certain PS4 games.

In an initial comparison shared on the gaming forum ResetERA, one user claimed Bloodborne did not noticeably improve on the PS5 Pro. However, further side-by-side comparisons revealed a slight sharpening effect due to AI upscaling, which brings a modest enhancement to the game’s visuals. Although this improvement is not transformative, it does add clarity to the game, which runs at a native 1080p resolution on the PS4 and is capped at 30 FPS with uneven frame pacing issues. Unfortunately, boosting Bloodborne’s frame rate beyond this requires a jailbroken console and a specific patch.

There is still uncertainty about the upscaling being used here. It could be AMD’s Super Resolution, which operates on AMD hardware and could run on the PS5. Alternatively, Sony might have implemented its proprietary upscaling technology with PSSR for this enhanced mode.

With the PS5 Pro’s release on November 7, 2024, more detailed comparisons are expected, which should provide a clearer view of the benefits that this console brings to older PS4 titles like Bloodborne.
