PS5 Update Adds Multi-Device Controller Pairing and Power Saver Mode

by Greg Martin

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that a new PlayStation 5 system software update will roll out worldwide starting September 16, 2025. The update introduces two key features: the ability to pair DualSense controllers across multiple devices simultaneously and a new Power Saver option for supported games.

The new controller pairing system allows both the DualSense and DualSense Edge wireless controllers to be registered with up to four devices at once, including PS5, PC, Mac, and smartphones. Until now, users were required to re-pair their controller each time they switched devices. With this change, players can switch between devices directly from the controller using button combinations, making it easier to alternate between platforms such as console gaming and Remote Play on mobile.

Sony provided detailed instructions on how to assign devices to four slots using combinations of the PS button and action buttons. Once registered, users can switch between devices without repeating the pairing process. The feature is aimed at making controllers more versatile across different platforms, which Sony notes is part of its effort to create a more flexible gaming ecosystem.

The update also introduces Power Saver, a new system-level option that allows supported PS5 games to operate at lower power consumption. According to Sony, this is part of its broader environmental initiative, “Road to Zero,” which targets net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. Power Saver reduces performance in supported titles, but Sony emphasized that games without explicit support will not be affected.

Initial games expected to add Power Saver compatibility in future updates include Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Demon’s Souls, and Ghost of Yōtei, with more titles planned. Sony has not yet specified how much power reduction players can expect or whether the performance scaling will affect frame rates or visual quality.

The company has been gradually expanding PS5 system functionality since the console’s launch in 2020, with updates ranging from UI improvements to expanded peripheral compatibility. This latest update reflects both a push toward cross-device convenience for players and alignment with broader sustainability goals.
