A new round of leaks has surfaced online regarding Sony’s rumored PS6 handheld, codenamed “Canis,” offering a detailed look at its potential hardware and performance targets. According to documents and claims shared by Moore’s Law Is Dead (MILD), the system could arrive in Fall 2027 alongside the mainline PlayStation 6 console.
The leaked specifications suggest that the Canis handheld will be built on a monolithic ~135 mm² die manufactured on TSMC’s 3 nm process. It reportedly features a 6-core CPU composed of four Zen 6c cores and two Zen 6 LP cores, paired with a 192-bit LPDDR5X-8533 memory controller supporting up to 48 GB of RAM. On the graphics side, the device is said to house 16 RDNA 5 compute units, clocked at approximately 1.20 GHz in handheld mode and up to 1.65 GHz when docked. Performance estimates suggest rasterization will reach around 55 to 75 percent of a PlayStation 5 in docked mode, with ray tracing capabilities projected to surpass the PS5 by a significant margin.
Other listed features include backward compatibility with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles, a microSD slot, M.2 SSD storage expansion, haptic vibration, dual microphones, and a touchscreen. The documents also mention that the low-power CPU cores will primarily handle operating system tasks, potentially freeing up as much as 20 percent of processing power for games.
In terms of real-world comparisons, insiders claim the Canis handheld should comfortably outperform Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox Ally X, thanks to faster compute units and increased bandwidth. Support for AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR 4) is also expected to play a key role in pushing visual quality closer to home console levels.
The information appears to trace back to an alleged AMD presentation from 2023, also shared by content creator Moore’s Law Is Dead. Those slides reportedly detailed ongoing discussions between Sony Interactive Entertainment and AMD about both the PS6 and its portable counterpart. While the PS6 is rumored to target performance around three times higher than the base PS5, the Canis handheld aims to deliver a more modest balance of efficiency and portability.
Moore’s Law Is Dead has occasionally reported inaccuracies in the past, so details may change as the project progresses. Nevertheless, the overall consistency of the leaks suggests that Sony is developing a genuine handheld companion for its next-generation console. This device is expected to serve as a higher-performance alternative to Nintendo’s Switch 2 while also being priced more accessibly than the PS6 itself.
As with any early leak, the details remain speculative until Sony makes an official announcement. Still, if these specifications hold true, the Canis handheld could mark Sony’s most ambitious return to portable gaming hardware in more than a decade.
