Rockstar Games’ celebrated western epic Red Dead Redemption looks to be coming to current-generation platforms, as a recent ESRB listing confirms a rating for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series consoles. The new classification is the first official sign of a current-generation version of the title, which originally debuted on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010.
The listing, published on the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) website, maintains the game’s established Mature 17+ rating and describes it as an open-world action-adventure game containing intense violence, nudity, strong language, and drug use. The page specifically references the same story content and gameplay elements seen in previous versions of Red Dead Redemption and its Undead Nightmare expansion, but the updated platform list now includes the Nintendo Switch 2, showing Rockstar’s plans to extend its western classic to current-generation hardware.
This follows the 2024 release of the game’s PC version, which was the first time Red Dead Redemption became natively playable on modern computers. That enhanced edition featured significant visual upgrades such as native 4K resolution, ultrawide display support, unlocked frame rates up to 144Hz, and compatibility with NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR technologies. Given these improvements, the new console ratings strongly suggest that Red Dead Redemption will soon receive similar enhancements on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series systems, potentially offering comparable performance boosts and modern graphical features.
The addition of Switch 2 to the rating database further emphasizes Nintendo’s growing relationship with third-party developers as the company moves to its new console generation. Rockstar previously released Red Dead Redemption for the original Switch in August 2023, alongside Undead Nightmare, marking the franchise’s first appearance on a Nintendo platform.
While Rockstar has yet to make an official announcement, the timing of this updated rating—along with the company’s consistent history of multi-platform re-releases—suggests that a formal reveal may be coming soon. Given that the Red Dead Redemption PC release occurred less than a year ago, a cross-platform rollout for current-generation consoles would be consistent with the studio’s ongoing efforts to modernize its classic catalog ahead of its next major project.
