Capcom is reportedly not planning a remake of Resident Evil 1, and instead may focus on one for Resident Evil Code Veronica or Resident Evil Zero.
Known insider Dusk Golem (aka AestheticGamer1) took to Twitter/X to respond to a question regarding the possibility of Capcom working on a Resident Evil 1 remake. In his response, he clarified that, as far as he knows and last heard, such a remake is currently not being worked on. As per him, the next mainline entries that will receive the remake treatment are Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil Code Veronica. That said, he does believe a Resident Evil 1 RE-Remake will happen sometime after the next few years.

As for why Golem believes the next mainline entries set to receive the remake treatment are Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil Code Veronica and not Resident Evil 1, he mentioned four key reasons. First, he said that there are several people at Capcom M-Two who previously worked on the original Resident Evil 0, including its director and producer, and are now interested in tackling a remake. Second, in a survey from a few years ago, Capcom asked fans which Resident Evil titles they would most want to see remade, and Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil Code Veronica were by far the most requested.
Third, he mentioned that Resident Evil Zero isn’t as big in size as its contemporaries, Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, and is in many ways the “easiest” main entry in the series left to remake. Lastly, Golem said that Capcom is waiting for the right circumstances, the right time and place for a Resident Evil 1 remake to happen, and for the most ideal release window for it to be done with “interesting people” potentially attached to it.
Earlier in January, 2025, the same insider claimed that Capcom has been working on a remake as well as a film adaptation of Resident Evil Zero. Read about it here.
