Resident Evil 5 recently received a new ESRB rating for the Xbox Series X and S, sparking rumors that Capcom might be planning to release an upgraded version of the game for current-generation consoles. This rating follows a similar one for Resident Evil 6, further fueling speculation. While Capcom hasn’t officially confirmed any plans, its history of updating older Resident Evil games for modern hardware suggests this could be a possibility.
According to the ESRB, Resident Evil 5 is a survival horror game where players take on the roles of two agents trying to stop a viral outbreak. The game is played from a third-person perspective, with players exploring environments, solving puzzles, and fighting mutated humans and creatures. Combat involves weapons like pistols, shotguns, machine guns, knives, and grenades, accompanied by realistic gunfire sounds, cries of pain, and blood-splatter effects. Some attacks can result in dismemberment or decapitation, and the game features graphic scenes, including bloodstains, corpses, and scattered organs. Cutscenes depict intense violence, such as a man being eaten by a crocodile, a character impaled, another killed by a chainsaw, and one being bitten in half by a mutated creature. The rating also notes the use of strong language, including the word “f**k.”
This new rating is similar to the recent one given for Resident Evil 6 on Xbox Series consoles. However, Capcom has not yet made an official announcement.
Resident Evil 5 and 6 currently run at 60 FPS on consoles. The upcoming upgrade may include an enhancement to 4K resolution and possibly support for 120 FPS on current-generation consoles, although nothing has been confirmed at this time.
Capcom recently released a remake of Resident Evil 4 for current-generation consoles and PC. They have not announced a new game in the franchise, but there are some rumors about what they might be working on next.
