Resident Evil Franchise Achieves Milestone as Modern Entries Surpass 10 Million Sales Each

Capcom has announced a significant sales milestone for its flagship horror series, Resident Evil. According to the company’s latest Platinum Titles update, every major release in the franchise since Resident Evil 7, including new installments and modern remakes, has individually sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. This marks a remarkable turnaround for a series that once faced uncertainty regarding its future.

The sales figures highlight the commercial strength of the recent entries. Resident Evil 2 (2019) leads the group with 15.8 million units sold, followed closely by Resident Evil 7: Biohazard at 15.4 million units. Resident Evil Village has reached 12.2 million units, while the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 stands at 10.6 million. Resident Evil 3 (2020) completes the list with 10.2 million units sold. Each of these games has been released across multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

This performance is a stark contrast to the period following Resident Evil 6, which, despite strong initial sales, faced widespread criticism for moving away from the series’ survival horror roots. The critical and commercial reception to Resident Evil 7 revitalized the brand, reintroducing a more tense, atmospheric style of gameplay while also embracing modern first-person design. The subsequent remakes further reinforced the franchise’s position in the market, appealing both to long-time fans and a new generation of players.

First introduced in 1996, Resident Evil—known as Biohazard in Japan—helped define the survival horror genre. Over the years, it has evolved through multiple gameplay perspectives, from fixed-camera exploration to third-person action and, most recently, to immersive first-person experiences. The brand has since expanded into films, television, novels, and other media, becoming one of the highest-grossing horror franchises in history.

With total franchise sales surpassing 170 million units worldwide as of March 2025, Resident Evil remains Capcom’s best-selling series. The momentum shows no signs of slowing, as the ninth main entry, Resident Evil Requiem, is set to launch on February 27, 2026.
