Resident Evil Movie Reportedly Gets Story Logline, Promises Chaotic Horror Experience

The upcoming Resident Evil movie from filmmaker Zach Cregger, best known for his work on Barbarian and Weapons, has reportedly had its story logline leaked. According to JoBlo, the film centers on Bryan, a laid-back organ courier tasked with a late-night delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital. His routine journey takes a deadly turn when he strikes a mysterious woman on a snowy mountain road. Though she survives, something is clearly wrong. Bryan’s attempt to help soon entangles him in a devastating outbreak filled with grotesque tentacle-driven mutations and bio-engineered monstrosities.

This supposed logline gained further credibility when insider Daniel Richtman, known online as Daniel RPK, shared the same details on social media. Richtman confirmed that the character Bryan will be played by Austin Abrams, who has previously been described by Cregger as the “heart of the movie.”

Beyond the leaked premise, not much is known about the project. What has been confirmed is that the movie will be an original story set within the Resident Evil universe, rather than a direct adaptation of an existing game. Sony Pictures plans to release the film on September 18, 2026, with Constantin Film, PlayStation Productions, and Columbia Pictures all attached to the production.

Cregger himself offered insights earlier this year during an appearance on The Big Picture podcast. He explained that his Resident Evil adaptation will draw inspiration from Evil Dead 2, aiming for a frenzied, chaotic descent into horror rather than a straightforward retelling of the franchise’s past. Interestingly, he admitted to never watching the previous Resident Evil movies but stressed that his vision comes from a sincere creative place. “This is a story that I would have wanted to write whether I got Resident Evil the IP or not,” Cregger remarked.

The director also noted that the story will follow a real-time progression, taking audiences from point A to point B while steadily intensifying the sense of dread. With production set to begin in the Czech Republic, the untitled reboot is shaping up to be both a new chapter for the series and, in Cregger’s words, a “love letter” to the games themselves.

While many details remain under wraps, early indications suggest that this film could stand apart from past adaptations by focusing less on spectacle and more on claustrophobic, unpredictable terror. If the reported logline holds true, audiences can expect a nightmarish journey through Raccoon City unlike any they have seen before.
