Resident Evil Requiem Features A Dynamic Difficulty System; Here’s How It Works

by Muhammad Ali Bari

Capcom’s latest survival horror game, Resident Evil Requiem, features a dynamic difficulty system. Here’s how it works.

Content creator and modder Fluffyquack took to Twitter/X to share their findings from a datamine ofResident Evil Requiem game files, revealing that the game features a dynamic difficulty system operating behind the scenes, continuing a tradition that dates back to the original Resident Evil 4. They discovered that while players choose from 4 fixed difficulty settings, the game actually adjusts between a total of 10 difficulty ranks during gameplay.

How Resident Evil Requiem’s Dynamic Difficulty System Works

Players choose between Casual, Modern, Classic, and Insanity difficulty settings in Resident Evil Requiem. However, under the hood, the game dynamically shifts between ranks 0 through 9 depending on player performance. While not directly tested during gameplay, the dataminer noted that it likely functions similar to prior entries, where taking damage or dying lowers the difficulty rank and performing well and dealing damage raises it.

Each difficulty mode has a minimum and maximum rank range, as seen below.

  • Casual: 0 to 2
  • Modern: 3 to 7
  • Classic: 4 to 8
  • Insanity: Locked at 9

Classic mode slightly increases the overall difficulty ceiling from Modern. Rank 4 serves as the baseline with all modifiers at 1x, meaning Modern can dip below default difficulty. However, Classic can spike up to Rank 8, significantly increasing incoming damage. At higher ranks, enemies move faster, players take much more damage, and enemies are far less likely to stagger. Rank 9 (Insanity mode) in particular is brutal, where players are locked to taking 3.6x damage, while enemies have only a 0.1x chance to flinch.
