Riot Games Scales Back 2XKO Team, Confirms Ongoing Support

by Greg Martin

Riot Games has announced a reduction in the size of the development team working on 2XKO, citing sustainability concerns as the project continues to evolve across PC and console platforms.

In a statement shared with the community, executive producer Tom Cannon confirmed that the decision followed extensive internal discussions and analysis of player engagement trends. While 2XKO has attracted a dedicated and passionate core audience, Riot acknowledged that overall momentum has not reached a level that would support the current team structure over the long term.

According to Cannon, the studio believes that scaling down to a smaller, more focused team will allow development to continue in a more sustainable way. Riot plans to concentrate on targeted improvements to the game, including addressing areas that players have already been vocal about. More details on upcoming changes and priorities are expected to be shared in the near future.

Despite the staffing changes, Riot emphasized that its plans for the 2XKO 2026 Competitive Series remain unchanged. The company reaffirmed its commitment to working with tournament organizers and local fighting game communities, with continued support for the events and grassroots organizers that form the backbone of the fighting game ecosystem.

Riot also stressed that the decision does not reflect on the quality of work delivered by individual developers or signal an end to the project. Instead, the studio described the move as an operational shift aimed at giving 2XKO a clearer and more viable path forward.

Addressing the impact on staff, Cannon highlighted the contributions made by the developers who worked on 2XKO, noting the creative risks and years of effort invested in bringing the game to life. Riot stated that it is committed to supporting affected employees through the transition, including helping them explore other roles within the company where possible. For those unable to transition internally, Riot is offering a minimum of 6 months of notice pay and severance.

Riot acknowledged that the update is likely to raise concerns within the community and said it intends to remain transparent as development continues. The company thanked players for their continued passion and engagement, describing community support as a key source of motivation as the team enters the next phase of 2XKO’s development.

2XKO remains in active development, with Riot positioning the restructuring as a step toward refining the game and strengthening its long-term future rather than winding it down.
